Psychiatry

Psychiatry is a medical specialty, much like cardiology or surgery. It is dedicated to the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of mental illnesses. Some of the most common mental illnesses include major depression, anxiety disorders, attention deficit disorder, and schizophrenia. Psychiatry employs a bio-psycho-social approach, which combines an understanding of the biology of the brain, the psychology of the individual, and the effects of their social situation.

Biology

All emotion, thought, and behavior begin in the brain. The brain, being an organ of the human body, is affected by hormonal and biochemical fluctuations, deficiencies in nutrients, dehydration or lack of sleep, the presence of drugs or alcohol, and even by certain infections and tumors.

Psychology

It is the totality of an individual's perceptions, thoughts, emotions, and reactions. How one perceives and analyzes a situation will influence how they feel and how they interact with others. Some ways of thinking may generate pleasant emotions and harmonious interactions, while others may not.

The well-being or suffering of an individual can be greatly affected by their daily experiences. Is the person alone or surrounded by family and friends? Do they have a secure home and enough money to meet their needs? Do they have many responsibilities? Are they experiencing significant changes such as a new job, marriage or divorce, grief, or a move?

All these biological, psychological, and social factors are considered in the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders.
